Jenkins Lake Hike

13th July 2003 by cplee

Wayne and I went hiking with our dogs around Jenkins Lake area and we found geocache GCE0A. The cache was rather difficult to find under the heavy tree covering…Wayne was actually standing right on the cache for a few minutes as we tried to descramble the clues. The lake was great for the dogs, with lots of sandy beaches and sticks to chase after. I think I need to bring the boat down here.
After the lake, we went into the Eldorado National Forest area to track down a Benchmark called JS4050. This was actually a triangulation station disk set into the top of a round concrete monument on the top of a hill. We drove up as far as we could and hiked up the rest of the way. We were able to find the concrete monument, but someone had stolen the disk. The lookout tower and cabin had been heavily vandelized as well.
I was just impressed that we were able to track down to within 10 ft accuracy a landmark that some guy put down over 60 years ago with primitive equipment! These markers hold a lot of historical significance and its a shame to see them being destroyed like this….bummer.
